Artificial Muse
Launched in Vancouver in 2024 by the Embassy of France to Canada / Institut français du Canada as part of its “Résidences Ouest-Ouest” program, the Artificial Muse music creation and artificial intelligence residency is the result of a partnership with Simon Fraser University's Metacreation Lab for Creative AI (School of Interactive Arts & Technology, Surrey) and the Centre for Digital Media (CDM, Vancouver).
This residency is open to any artist based in France who wishes to explore the intersections between music/sound creation and artificial intelligence. The residency offers artists the opportunity to work on a music or sound art project within a research and creation laboratory using cutting-edge AI and in contact with a local artistic and creative technologies ecosystem.
Simon Fraser University, through its Metacreation Lab for Creative AI in Surrey, and the Centre for Digital Media, a graduate-level digital arts institution located in Vancouver's Creative District, provide the selected artist with a space for reflection and work. The artist will have access to local researchers, creators, and students, and will therefore be able to develop a project using the systems, equipment, and software from the research laboratory that they need to do so.
The residency also aims to enable French artists to expand their professional networks, create new synergies, and strengthen ties between France and Western Canada.
Open to artists of all practices (sound art, composition, performance, etc.) and musical genres, this residency allows French artists to immerse themselves in Vancouver's local ecosystem in order to collaborate and enrich their practice.
