Art + Contestation

Launched by the Embassy of France to Canada / Institut français du Canada and the SAW artists' centre, with support from the Digital Arts Resource Centre video production centre and the Artengine digital arts production centre in 2022, ART + CONTESTATION is a research and production residency program.

This multidisciplinary program is aimed in particular, but not exclusively, at visual artists, including those who use screen printing, and French digital artists working in the fields of film, video, and new media. It aims to support the production of artistic works that address contemporary social issues or social and political movements

The selected candidate will complete a 4-week residency in Canada's national capital region. The artist will be provided with accommodation and a private studio at SAW. Depending on their needs, they will also have access to video production equipment, editing rooms, a recording studio, an additive manufacturing studio (3D printing), and a screen-printing studio for paper and textiles. At the end of the residency, SAW and its partners will also consider providing exhibition or screening opportunities.

ART + CONTESTATION received support for its launch in 2022 from the Institut français as part of “La Fabrique des Résidences,” a program that aims to promote the development of residencies within the French cultural network abroad.

Objectives

  • Promote the visibility of the French emerging art scene to the general public and professionals in the Canadian cultural sector.

  • Introduce the French art scene to Ottawa's cultural organizations, particularly Canadian federal institutions, to facilitate long-term cooperation.

  • Promote the production of works of art that reflect major contemporary issues, in line with our commitment to the debate of ideas.
