La Fête de la science 2024 in Canada

For the 4th year in a row, the Embassy of France to Canada and its partners are organizing 3 major events for La Fête de la science in October 2024.

The theme for 2024, “Ocean of Knowledge,” promises to immerse participants in the world of marine issues. The events of the festival will bring together experts, educators, students and young audiences who share a passion for science and will address the challenges facing the oceans, a few months before the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (#UNOC3) which will take place in Nice in June 2025.

Hamilton: At the heart of scientific discovery

In Hamilton, McMaster University will be the scene of a double celebration. A ceremony to award the Palmes Académiques (“academic palms”) to Dr. Hatem Zurob will be followed by an educational event open to the general public. Members of the Hamilton community will have the opportunity to learn about what it means, concretely, to be a researcher or an engineer. A tour of the university, discovery stands and lectures led by Dr. Sarah Dickson-Anderson and Murielle Veron, professor at the University of Grenoble Alpes, will make up a rich programme to raise awareness among the scientists of tomorrow!

Toronto and Ottawa: Science touring schools

In Toronto and Ottawa, Gaëlle Alméras, author of the graphic novel Super Ocean Weekend, will be touring schools. Her presentations will raise awareness among more than 300 primary and secondary school students about ocean conservation. Students will also hear about what it’s like to be a comic book author and science communicator. Gaëlle will be welcomed by the Lycée Claudel in Ottawa, the Académie Providence Sœurs Antonines and the Toronto French School.

Ottawa: International exchanges for the Atlantic Ocean

Finally, in Ottawa, a visit from Florence Coroner, Head of International Affairs at Ifremer, will be an opportunity for exchanges with the Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI), JPI Oceans and NORCE Norwegian Research Centre. Topics to be covered include the observation of the carbon cycle in the North Atlantic. Tony Cabus, a post-doctoral researcher specializing in ocean conservation, will be invited by the Embassy to participate in the AAORIA (All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance) forum, the largest scientific conference dedicated to the Atlantic Ocean.
