1 - About the residency

For its third edition, the “Artificial Muse” residency invites a French artist to explore and develop practices at the intersection between musical creation and artificial intelligence.

It is offered by the Institut Français du Canada as part of its “Résidences Ouest-Ouest” program, in partnership with the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI at Simon Fraser University (SFU School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT), in Surrey.

The Metacreation Lab for Creative AI will provide the selected artist with a space for reflection and work. In contact with local researchers, creators, and students, they will be able to develop a project using and appropriating the systems, equipment, and software from the research laboratory.

From November 1st to November 30th, 2026, in Vancouver and Surrey, BC, Canada.

  • Foster or consolidate a creative project based on innovative technologies developed at the Meta creation Lab for Creative AI.
  • Encourage the discovery of Western Canada’s creative technology ecosystem, as well as structuring collaborations with local artists, industry and academic researchers, students, start-ups, and larger creative tech companies.
  • Participate in educational forums and student learning opportunities such as presentations, panels, critiques, workshops, and informal mentorship.
  • At the end of the residency, the artist must agree to share their work(s) and submit a report on their experience, their work, and the development of the project during this period.

As part of a vast global network, the Institut français du Canada’s mission is to strengthen ties between France and Canada and promote exchanges through artistic, educational, scientific, and academic projects.

In collaboration with our public and private partners, we organise a variety of events and develop customised programmes.

We also support the talents of today and tomorrow through residencies in France and Canada for artists and intellectuals, thereby promoting cross-cultural research and creation between our two countries.

“Artificial Muse” is part of a broader residency program run by the Institut français du Canada in Western Canada, entitled “Les Résidences Ouest-Ouest” (West-West Residencies): in 2026, it will also offer creative residencies in art and astronomy, and in the field of immersive realities.

Since 2008, the Metacreation Lab for Artificial Intelligence Creative has been a space for research and creation around generative systems. Whether through its scientific production of new algorithms and systems, partnerships with the creative software industry, or artistic practices using, evaluating, and criticizing these same systems, the Lab’s mission is an interdisciplinary exploration of the partial or complete automation of creative tasks.
